We had some of the coldest days in recorded history this winter, which really did a number on our winter garden. Hopefully that is well past. It’s not really spring, but the days are getting longer, and the gardening itch is upon me. I planted some early lettuce, water cress, spinach, and parsley in flats in the house. As these germinate, I move them into the green house, where they are protected under a sheet of row cover for extra protection from the cold.
San Marzano
San Marzano is an Italian Heirloom variety, grown outside Naples since the 18th Century. It is the only tomato variety that may be used in the sauce employed for Vera Pizza Napoletana (true Naples Pizza).
2015 – June 28- 3′ vines with 5 fruit.
July 9 – 3′ vine, 60 fruit.
Brandywine
Brandywine is the great tasting beef-steak variety that started the heirloom tomato craze. Unfortunately, it does have a strong tendency to split.
Italian Tree
Neves Azorean Red
Neves Azorean Red produces big beef-steak tomatoes with green shoulders. The sprawling indeterminate vines produce large crops of fruit.
August Bounty
Yeller. This yellow-orange variety arose in my garden as the result of unintentional cross-breeding of Manitoba with another unknown variety.
